A cylindrical (Bessel) wave ψ = J_m(κρ)·e^{i(mφ + k_z z − ωt)} has a definite projection of the orbital angular momentum, L_z = mħ: its phase winds m times around the axis, on the axis (m ≠ 0) the phase is undefined and the intensity vanishes — a dark core. The surfaces of constant phase are m intertwined helicoids (a screw with m threads). Such a beam is made by sending a Gaussian beam through a spiral phase plate or a spatial light modulator showing e^{imφ}: the field becomes a Laguerre–Gauss mode LG₀^m — a ring of radius w·√(|m|/2) with the same winding of the phase. The sign of m is the direction of the twist.
