Two neutron stars (1.438 and 1.390 solar masses) on an eccentric orbit with a period of 7.75 h radiate gravitational waves. The orbit shrinks, the period falls, and the periastron arrives earlier than for a constant period. On the right the accumulated shift grows: about −38.6 s over 30 years in general relativity, and the measured period derivative gives the same curve within the uncertainty (ratio 0.9983 ± 0.0016). The orbit shrinkage, the phase shift and the wave pattern in the animation are schematic.
