The Casimir effect

Topic: Vacuum effects and boundaries

  1. Consider the Casimir effect in 3D. Compute the pressure with which the plates attract each other, using the Euler–Maclaurin formula.

  2. Explain the nature of the attraction between the plates. Can energy be extracted from the vacuum in this way?

  3. Estimate the pressure. Compare it with the gravitational attraction of the plates as a function of the distance between them.

  4. Review the experimental methods and results of measurements of the Casimir effect.
