Плоская волна, бегущая вдоль z, с поляризациями ε_R ∝ (1, i, 0) (правая) и ε_L ∝ (1, −i, 0) (левая): E_R = (cos(ωt − kz), sin(ωt − kz), 0), у E_L знак второй компоненты обратный. Любая поляризация есть a_R ε_R + a_L ε_L: равные амплитуды дают линейную поляризацию (фаза поворачивает ось), неравные — эллипс с полуосями a_R + a_L и |a_R − a_L|.A plane wave along z with the polarizations ε_R ∝ (1, i, 0) (right) and ε_L ∝ (1, −i, 0) (left): E_R = (cos(ωt − kz), sin(ωt − kz), 0), E_L has the opposite sign of the second component. In the convention of the book (as in particle physics) “right” means that for an observer at the source looking along the wave E rotates clockwise (counterclockwise for the receiver looking toward the oncoming wave): this is positive helicity, the photon spin projection S_z = +ħ. For ε_L it is the other way round, S_z = −ħ. Optics counts from the receiver and calls the same wave left. A snapshot of E_R(z) is a left-handed helix in space, while the rotation in time is right-handed. Any polarization is a_R ε_R + a_L ε_L: equal amplitudes give linear polarization (the phase turns the axis), unequal ones an ellipse with semi-axes a_R + a_L and |a_R − a_L|.
