Thomson's experiment: the charge-to-mass ratio of cathode rays

Траектории электронов в ролике рассчитаны численно (единицы условные: e/m = 1).Cathode rays fly through crossed electric and magnetic fields and hit a fluorescent screen. The electric field moves the spot up, towards the positive plate, the magnetic field moves it down; the magnetic deflection depends on the speed. Tuning B until the spot returns to the centre gives the speed of the particles, v = E/B, and the deflection with B switched off then gives e/m = y_E·E/(B²ℓ(ℓ/2 + D)). Thomson found e/m of the order of 10¹¹ C/kg, about 1800 times that of the hydrogen ion: the cathode rays are particles much lighter than an atom. The electron trajectories in the film are computed numerically (arbitrary units: e/m = 1).
