The Earth as a shield: muons stop, neutrinos pass

Cosmic rays make showers all over the atmosphere of the Earth, and each shower gives muons and neutrinos. The planet is cut along a plane through the detector: crust, mantle, liquid outer core and solid inner core with the PREM densities. A muon of TeV energy loses it in a few kilometres of rock (the range is $0.93$ km for $1$ TeV and $6.4$ km for $1$ PeV: about $10^{-3}R_\oplus$ or less), so only neutrinos arrive from below; an upgoing muon is the footprint of a neutrino that interacted near the detector. But a neutrino does not always pass either: the probability of no interaction along a chord is $P_0=e^{-\tau}$, $\tau=N_A\sigma(E)X$, where $X=\int\rho\,dl$ is the column of matter. Along a diameter ($X=1.09\cdot10^{10}$ g/cm$^2$) $P_0=95\%$ at $1$ TeV, $15\%$ at $100$ TeV and $0.19\%$ at $1$ PeV; the shorter the chord, the more transparent the Earth, and with the energy the "window" narrows towards the horizon.

Note
Нейтрино считаются только до первого взаимодействия (продукты NC и регенерация $\tau$ не прослеживаются); атмосфера (показана до 40 км), ливни и детектор увеличены; пересечение Земли показано замедленно (на деле $43$ мс).Surface map: NASA Blue Marble Next Generation (July 2004, NASA Earth Observatory); density: PREM (Dziewonski, Anderson, 1981); neutrino cross sections: CSMS (Cooper-Sarkar, Mertsch, Sarkar, arXiv:1106.3723); muon ranges: PDG tables of standard rock and water; showers: the Heitler–Matthews model. Neutrinos are followed up to the first interaction only (NC products and tau regeneration are not propagated); the atmosphere (shown up to 40 km), showers and the detector are enlarged; the crossing of the Earth is shown in slow motion (the real one takes $43$ ms).
